Family Therapy

(including youth ages 10+)

Family Therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that involves working with multiple family members as a group (in contrast with Individual Therapy, where the focus is working one-on-one with an individual client). Family Therapy aims to enhance communication, identify unhelpful patterns of interaction, develop more adaptive patterns of interaction, create healthier relationship dynamics, increase flexibility in terms of roles, rules, and coalitions, support healthy developmental milestones, process and resolve conflicts, and improve the overall safety, cohesion, interpersonal functioning, and well-being amongst family members within a particular family system.

Families may also seek support navigating a particular event or transition that impacts the family as a whole, for example, Family Therapy can also be ideal for family members seeking ways to support an immediate family member as they navigate a particular mental health and wellness concern, a medical issue, chronic illness, or recent diagnosis.

How can Family Therapy help?

Family Therapy helps participating family members learn to foster a deeper understanding of their respective family members’ thoughts, feelings, experiences, and needs. By creating a safe, open, neutral space, family members can learn better ways of communicating, expressing, and receiving these messages and build moments of connection. The overarching goal of Family Therapy is to strengthen family relationships, improve communication, and enhance the well-being of all family members.
